Microsoft Reportedly Eyeing Facebook

Microsoft Corp. measured Facebook Inc.’s interest in a possible acquisition after its failed takeover attempt of Yahoo Inc., the Wall Street Journal reported. The newspaper reported on its Web site that Microsoft's bankers had sent out feelers to Facebook, to test whether the company would be receptive to an acquisition. The talks were first reported by All Things Digital, owned by Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones. In October last year, Microsoft took a $240 million stake in Facebook, which valued the start-up at $15 billion. Citing an unnamed source, the report said that there were no active discussions taking place between the two companies. The news came a few days after Microsoft dropped its unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo Inc. for $47.5 billion. Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker declined to comment on the report. Microsoft officials were not immediately available for comment.

Facebook Launches Chat Feature

Facebook Inc. unveiled a new chat feature that rivals Google's popular Gmail chat program. A new chat bar appears at the bottom of the user's browser when signed into Facebook, showing the online status of the user and other friends signed on the networking site. Availability is indicated by a green dot similar to the one on Google's Gmail chat.

American Airlines Launches Exciting New Application Using Facebook Inc.'s Platform

American Airlines is now bringing people together through cyberspace on Facebook Platform. American Airlines has launched Travel Bag, an exciting new application on Facebook Platform that makes it easy for users to share travel experiences with friends in their network; to offer and read reviews and comments on things such as restaurants and shops; and even to create countdowns for upcoming events or trips to let friends know what they're doing to.

Facebook Prom

Facebook held a prom for its employees in San Francisco last night at the Metreon. The shopping mall-cineplex's fourth floor was tastefully decorated with white flowers, and the gathered Facebookers were dressed up — and so youthful, you might think it was an actual prom, save for the booze being poured at the open bars. (Ubiquitous photographee Julia Allison, who was invited, did not attend, staying in New York for a book party instead.) Why throw a prom? Facebook is going all-out for prom season this year, with a tie-in to Sony's Prom Night and a prom-dress partnership with Sears. Why not reward employees working on prom marketing campaigns with a throwback prom of their own?

But besides the commercial rationale, there's a more disturbing reason for Facebook to throw a prom for its employees. With its cafeterias, gyms, and volleyball courts, Google likes to makes its employees feel like they never left college. Could Facebook be trying to make its workers feel like they never left high school? Infantilization is an effective employee-retention program. But it is not a particularly attractive one.
